Deafgard fire alarm
The Deafgard is a device which alerts deaf guests when the smoke alarm sounds. It is triggered by the sound of the alarm and alerts the user via a high intensity strobe and vibrating under-pillow pad which are activated, waking the sleeping guest, enabling them to leave their room to a place of safety.
The benefts of Deafgard for accommodation providers:
-
It helps you to keep guests safe, save lives and meet your requirements under the Equality Act 2010.
-
No room adaptations required: the device is portable and wireless, which gives you the freedom to make any of your bedrooms safe for people with hearing loss.
-
Easy to use.
-
Battery operated.
-
It also doubles as an alarm clock for guests with hearing loss.

Deaf Messaging Service (DMS)
Ideal for large hotels, the DMS controller is a device which is hard-wired into the fire alarm panel. When the alarm sounds, it triggers a process that sends a text message to all the people connected to that location, giving guests with hearing loss the freedom to move around without the worry of missing an emergency situation. It also enables you to comply with the Equality Act 2010.
When guests with hearing loss make a reservation, you can email them the location code for your DMS with their booking confirmation. A connection text will then be sent and the person will be connected to DMS for your location. This service is discreet and (unlike paging systems) allow guests with hearing loss to be alerted with the need for them to carry anything other than their own mobile phone. On arrival, they need do nothing and may check in alongside their hearing companions in the usual way. Written instructions and a reminder of the DMS code should be given to the guest with their key and should also be in the guest information in each room.

Carbon monoxide alarm
Carbon monoxide it is a colourless, odourless, gaseous oxide, which is highly poisonous.
The following symptoms could indicate carbon monoxide poisoning: headaches, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, unconsciousness, respiratory problems and concentration problems.
Carbon monoxide poisoning may be caused by appliances which are incorrectly installed or poorly maintained. By law, boilers, gas cookers, stoves and flues in holiday homes in the UK should be tested annually by a Gas Safe Registered engineer: this is a legal duty.
If you own holiday accommodation in a country without the legal requirment for testing, you should still ensure that your accommodation is safe and, as the owner you could be liable for any injury or deaths which result form carbon monoxide poisoning.
In addition to annual testing, the Health and Safety Executive recommends the use of audible carbon monoxide alarms but these fail to take into account the needs of Deaf people and people with hearing loss. We recommend the installation of carbon monoxide alarms which link to strobes. There are also some which link to vibrating pillow pads.
We recommend only equipment which complies with British Standard EN 50291 and carries a British or European Kitemark.
Amplified telephone
People with hearing loss like room service just as much as the next person but often the phones in hotel rooms don't have amplification or a speakerphone option and are not hearing aid compatible. To ensure your room service offer to guests is accessible to people with hearing loss, we recommend phones which can be amplified, have tone adjustment, a visual ringer display, hearing aid compatibility and a speaker phone option.
Flashing Door Beacon
One of the difficulties guests with hearing loss face when in a hotel room or treatment room in a spa, is knowing when someone knocks on the door or tries the handle. A door beacon hangs on the back of a door and is activated by the vibration of someone knocking or trying the handle. A door beacon gives guests with hearing loss peace of mind, allowing them to relax - even when they are expecting room service.
Hearing Loop
Hearing loops - also known as 'induction loops' - help people who use Telecoil enabled hearing aids or Coclear Implants by overcoming physical barriers (such as ticket booth windows) and the barrier of 'distance' (such as that between a performer on stage and an audience member).
We work in partnership with world-leading hearing loop manufacturers, Ampetronic to ensure that our clients benefit from the leading expertise in the industry.
We have our own Access Solutions Loop Installer based in Yorkshire and for those of you in other locations, we can put you in contact with a qualified Loop Installer in your local area - all are trained and accredited by Ampetronic.
